Techniques: Sponge

Watch this tutorial or read our instructions below to learn how to use a sponge on your piece!

Using a sponge is one of the easiest ways to add texture to your piece!

Start by choosing your desired paint colors and applying a small amount of paint onto your sponge. Before applying it to your piece, gently dab some of the excess paint off onto a napkin, paper towel, or scrap piece of paper. This will help create a more even texture and prevent the paint from going on too thick.

Next, gently dab the sponge onto your piece. Experiment with different pressures and angles to create a variety of effects. You can also overlap different colors to create depth and variety.

If you’d like a more blended look, lightly sponge additional colors over your design while the paint is still wet. For a more defined pattern, allow each layer to dry before adding another color on top.

And that’s it, it’s really that easy!
